Don't come talk to the tiny owl to tell him lies, because he is just too wise! This small canvas showcases the Eastern Screech Owlet in his first experience to feel cold, light rain with eyes wide open, as it precariously rests in a tree hollow, staring into the darkness. This is the artist's very first oil painting, and she was no stranger to drama and turmoil herself. Although this creature is wild, it appears so gentle that one might want to reach up to touch those soft feathers. The eyes of this baby convey the truth that this rain feels cold on that protruding foot (also known as a talon). Owls are naturally equipped with sharp claws designed for hunting. If you spot a tiny heart hidden among the feathers, it was a charming secret the artist made for viewers to discover. Large, circular, golden eyes exude innocence, wide with wonder and curiosity about new surroundings. Everything is novel for this emerging fledgling. While the Sun has not yet risen in the painting, this nocturnal bird eagerly wishes to explore the world outside this misty tree nest. Be cautious with that first, initial step! Envision the green leaves rustling gently in the breeze and the soft green moss providing a cozy, yet slippery entrance. Symbolizing intelligence, wisdom, intuition, and transformation, the owl serves as a spirit animal reflecting deep connections to past experiences unveiling the magic of life. Again, this oil painting, created on canvas board in 1974, marked the artist's debut in this medium when she was a teenager.
